The Price We Pay

I've decided I can no longer afford to binge -- eating healthy, weighed and measured food has become prohibitively expensive enough.

I'm just back from the store where I spent $16.06 on a 10-ounce can of generic coffee, a container of Fage yogurt, a small box of Grapenuts and a cauliflower.

A package of Oreos and a pint of Hagen Daz is $9.96.

That's a bag of Beneful for Daisy.

Lots of rain here -- restless dogs who would come back caked in mud if they went to the park. I'm reading Emma and deciding what my next step in my novel is.

Oh, the humanity, she sighs...

Frances,

I am in the middle of reading your book. It is amazing. Thanks for sharing yourself. I'll be coming back to read your blog as well.

Good luck on your journey!

You know I'll bet Pop-Tarts are cheap. This would be just my luck. Cudos to you for reading Jame Austen. She makes me want to chew tin foil. You and the doggies have a dryish day if possible.

I'm afraid Lynn is right -- BAD food is probably cheaper than good -- and that SUCKS. But I'll try to remember the $$ next time I want to overeat...that might make a difference! Do I have to thank the Idiot's administration if this works? ;-)

I have the BEST time shopping in the marked down sections at my store. It makes me go home and cook RIGHT AWAY because I don't know how long the stuff will last. Mostly this is meat and produce section.

There is an elderly couple that I see in the store nearly every time I am there. I think that part of their daily ritual is to go shop the makrdown bins and then go home and make an interesting supper from what they found.

Shauna (DietGirl) talked about this with her mom in Australia too.

I am curious to see what the farm stand prices are when they get open and going.

I just finished reading your book. I identified with so many things. I also went to your blog where you wrote about "sugar nights", I related to that entirely, thank you for sharing your story.

And it's also cheaper not to "grow" out of my clothes and have to buy bigger sizes! You know, I have the black beast in my life sometimes, too & it sure yells at me when I'm trying on last summer's jeans shorts & they won't zip!!!!

Lately I have been deciding I can't afford to eat. And the healthy stuff seems to cost more, so I will have to eat even less. Or economize. My dog eats beneful, too. I am getting caught up on your posts and so glad you are posting more often. I love your elaborations on the red beast/demon. I think could write book on that one.

Kind of off topic, but do you really feed your animal Beneful? I raise dogs and have done a lot of research on the food we feed out pets (actually, I used to spend more time worrying about what they were eating while I was binging on junk food)
Beneful is full of artificial colors, added sugar and by products. You may want to look into feeding a better quality foods. They are out there and not really that more expensive.

Whenever I'm tempted by cheap junk food I try to remember that it really, truly is made out of crap. Someone once told me that some of the prepackaged "cakes" etc. that we buy are made out of floor sweepings--the flour that's in them isn't good enough to be sold as regular bag flour. UmmmmUMMMM...now there's an image...
